Built to compete in the Can-Am championship, it used a twin-turbo version of Porsche's flat-12 engine that could produce a massive 1600 horsepower on nearly 40 psi of boost in qualifying trim. The car was so powerful and dominant that it forced officials to change the rules of the popular Can-Am Sportscar series in North America in the early 1970s.
This car was raced by Mark Donohue under the Penske Racing banner. It took no less than 5 first place finishes and one second place, winning the 1973 season handedly. This same car also set the closed course speed record at Talladega Speedway in 1975, averaging a staggering 221.16 miles per hour. This unprecedented level of success caused the 917/30 to command respect by racers, engineers, and fans alike, making it one of the most iconic Porsche race cars to ever compete.
