1973 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA RS 2.7

ORIGINAL FINE ART PAINTING BY LANCE GROOTBOOM

The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is one of the most iconic and revered models in Porsche’s history, representing the pinnacle of the early 911 lineup. Released as a homologation special to meet the requirements for the FIA’s Group 4 racing regulations, it is often seen as the true precursor to the high-performance 911 models that followed.

The world premiere of the Porsche Carrera RS took place at the Paris Salon in October 1972. Originally a limited edition of only 500 copies was planned, but even before the Porsche RS was presented to the press, the entire edition of 500 copies was completely sold out. In March of the coming year the time had come and the construction of the second series began.

Only 1,580 units of the Carrera RS 2.7 were produced between 1972 and 1973, making it a relatively rare car. Of those, just about 50 cars were produced in the even more stripped-down M471 lightweight version. Today, these cars are highly sought after by collectors, and original examples can fetch several million dollars at auction.

Design

Distinctive Features: The RS is recognizable for its "ducktail" spoiler, which helped improve aerodynamics and stability at high speeds.

Aesthetic Appeal: It was available in a variety of colours, including the famous "Viper Green" and "Light Yellow," which have become highly sought after by collectors.

Engine and Performance

The Carrera RS 2.7 was powered by a 2.7-liter flat-six engine, a notable upgrade over the previous 2.4-liter engine used in the standard 911 models. This engine delivered 210 horsepower and about 188 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the most powerful 911s of its era.

Legacy

Cultural Impact: The 911 Carrera RS is celebrated not only for its racing pedigree but also for its influence on the sports car market. It laid the groundwork for future 911 models and established the Carrera name as synonymous with performance. Today, the Carrera RS is one of the most coveted classic cars, often fetching high prices at auctions and being a centrepiece in collections.

Overall, the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Coupé is a significant milestone in automotive history, representing the perfect blend of engineering, performance, and design.
